Default Valve Covers

Another noob mech question, yeah I know...but hey, I'm a noob mechanic...least I'm being consistent,

Anywho, what kind of nightmare is involved in getting the valve covers off? Was thinking about painting them, but I'm lazy and slightly paranoid. Looking at all those wires and hoses makes me twitch...[>:]

I think they're actually pretty easy once you get the wires out of the way. I know a lot of people have had their valve covers painted and most of them removed the covers themselves, so it shouldn't be that bad.

Just unbolt and remove. Get something to cover up the Openings with so dust and **** doesnt get into your engine (depending on how long you are keeping them off for painting). Also make sure you when put them on the gaskets are straight and everything should be good.

Be very careful to torque the bolts properly when you reinstall them. The heads of the bolts do not sit tightly on the valve cover, the little rubber grommets put all the pressure on that is needed so they won't leak. You can break these bolts pretty easily and you don't want that nightmare.

I painted mine with a quality primer and ceramic paint and they are holding up very nicely.

I thought you'd ask me that...

Unfortunately, I can't remember the brand of paint or primer I used. Duh.....!!!! That was the first mod I did to my car, so it's been a few months, several a$$ chewings from my wife, and several million brain cells since then.......[sm=alcoholic.gif]

Sorry. Check with your local body shop.

you should look into powder coating the covers in lieu of painting. they charge $100 @ a shop where i live

Cool. Thanks for the info.

This'll probably be a summer mod, but I'll be thinking about it all winter to figure out just what I want to do (if anything). I'll probably take several parts and just give'em to a shop to paint. I could paint them myself, but I figure the lack of hassle is worth the bucks.
