You mean the 3.55 will get better mileage?
ORIGINAL: slow07
Basically, it won't launch as hard, but it will get better gas mileage.

My bad. I should have specified that I was talking about the 3.31s.
mustangman02232, they are rated the same, but logic should tell you that (on the highway) the 3.31s will get better mileage because the engine is turning slower. The ratings are BS anyway. I get about 22mpg in town and about 27mpg on the highway (with a best of 29mpg). That is with 3.31s and a manual tranny, stock with "performance killing", "heavy", "non-retro", "ricer", "ghetto" 20 inch wheels.

Basically the higher the gear ratio number is the quicker the car will rev up. A 3.55 will be a little quicker off the line than the 3.31. The drawback is that the higher gear will make the car turn higher RPM in cruise decreasing the fuel economy. If you normally just cruise with the occasional playing the 3.31 should be fine. i have that ratio in my 07 GT and get 21mpg around town. All depends on which is more important to you.

I have the 3.55 ratio and I get barely over 17.2 miles per gallon around town and around 22 highway so far. I can't believe you get 21. My husband said that was a good option to have when we saw the 3.55 on the window sticker of my GT/CS, and I love driving the car, but man, that's a huge difference - are you sure your around town miles are really that good?

Slow takeoff, shifting at low RPMs vs. jack rabbit starts, higher revs.

Thats correct. I haven't had it on the highway yet so not sure what that will work out to be. Every time i fill up I record date/miles/gal and double check the computer. The car shows 20.4 on the avg economy but my calc works out at 20.8-21.2. I've only got 2500 miles so far so I've been taking it easy. how you drive it will make drastic differences in mpg.

A lot of that depends on how you drive it.

I'm a pretty tame driver. I may take off a little fast, but I definately shift at low RPMs. I haven't reset my computer in a long while so I'll do that and see if I can get a better average from more recent driving. I've got a little over 4,000 miles on my car so far and I've been watching the instant feedback screen a lot and there are many times where I can't seem to help but get low mileage, especially in the lower gears.

This is my opinion on this one:
If your planning on keeping your Mustang for a long time and keeping it stock, get the 3.55 gears. Make it a little more rare. I would recommend all the options for this.
If you are like 95% of the folks on these boards you will just end up going with the base gears and changing them later.
