Grade of oil / car use

RE: Grade of oil / car use
I've been a Redline oil fan for years. Always used their 20w-50. Have better than 300k miles of history.
When I got the the GT I discovered it wanted 5w-20, hurt my feelings. I contacted Redline. Was told that a heavier oil can cause misfire codes in new cars, and that Ford knew what the car needed. They said use Ford's recommendation.
However, I have my own "Ace in the hole". I also have some 300k miles of history with "Tufoil" an additive found at www.tufoil.com I use 8 ounces per oil change. I also use a 10% mix in my 5 speed trans. I can not perceive of driving my cars without "Tufoil" in them. I talked with Tufoil, they said DO NOT RUN IT till the car had 5k miles on it, cause it puts a serious hold on wear.
I changed oil to Redline and Tufoil at 4.6k miles. I felt a little better cause I did add a quart of Redline 5w-20 somewhere around 2 or 3 thousand miles.
I recently ran across another product, www.greaselightning.comwhich intrigues me. I won't use their oil treatment cause I'm a believer in Tufoil. But I did use their coolant additive. I also has "PTFE" in it, puts a coating of PTFE inside the cooling system so those deposits can not find a place to stick.
Incidentally, I'm also a motorcyclist, I use Mobil 1 in the bike cause I know Mobil 1 is a great oil, but Redline doesn't make a motorcycle specific oil.

Wow. I didn't realize RP was going to be THAT expensive. I think I'll pick up some Mobil 1 synthetic at Sams. Seems to be a pretty good deal there.
I've just crossed 15k miles. Is now a good time to switch to fully synthetic?

RE: Grade of oil / car use
Well this debate could go on forever. Here is my 2 cents. Mobil 1 invented the stuff for Jet airplanes. Amsoil invened the first 100% synthetic API rated motor oil in 1972, when no one wanted anything to do with synthetics. Don't be fooled , fully synthetic is not the same at 100% pure synthetic. In a fully synthetic oil, by law, only 10% of the bottles contents has to contain 100% pure synthetic. Actually Amsoil sued Mobil and one, because they claimed to be the first to market and in fact Amsoil was as it states on their bottles. Besides the very first thing you should change is your tranny fluid to synthetic whether is is maual or auto. Amsoil also offers thereown line of filtration which can filter under 1 micron if you desire. Google Amsoil to learn more. Hope this helps

RE: Grade of oil / car use
Well Here is what Amsoil recommeds for our cars. When I did my tranny ( manual ) I did it myself, drained it and used a grease tube with a tube that is specific for pushing the fluid into the tranny. It is like a big syringe. I first started using it 20 years ago in what is now my old 1986 Dodge D150 pickup. I have changed the tranny on that to Amsoil, never changed it again and it has never broke down. I changed the oil in all my vehicles once a year ( 2Amsoil oil filters per year) and always have. I have never had sludge or a mechanical break down ever in any vehicle in my whole driving life ( 27 years ) . I would recommed using an engine flush first ( this is a cleaner that you add to your old oil and let it idle only for 15 min before you use synthetics . One thing about K&N air filters, they are great until you clean them, If you have ever seen a proper video of air filter comparisons. K&N filters filtering capacity goes down by 50 % after 1 cleaning !! Because I have a WMS CAI system it uses a K&N, therefore I replace it every year. I am just like everyone else who is doing there homework about mods out there, I read and ask people who know better that I. The Lubricants in our cars are the life blood and I belive the insides should operate as efficiently as possible. Take the time to educate youselves.
Hope this helps
