RE: how are the Rs4 vs mustang ??
I looked at the RS4.. Its nice an all, but the fact is that you will find most are driven by 40 year olds that will never mod them.
So there is a good chance that if you have a stang with at least a CAI and tune and run up next to one on the street that you will take it if they try and race.
The RS4 is nice, but audi put 10K to much onto the price tag. I wish audi would go pack to using the smaller high reving setup with turbos for its high HP setups instead of doing it N/A. With the turbos they were made fast on the cheap. To make the RS4 faster is going to take some big money compared to the older S4 biturbo setups

Not to bounce it around to much but the Rs4 is only making 275ft/lbs up at 8250.
0-60 Rs4/GT 4.8/5.1
1/4 Rs4/GT 13.2/13.8
Price Rs4/GT $70k/$25k
Haha I guess the numbers make their point. I used to own a B6 A4 3.0 and my family a C5 A6, not a big fan of Audi after those cars. A more interesting race would be a B5 S4 with K04s, those cars are pretty intense.

If you go from a 40 roll, it will help you but it won't hurt him, he's not turbo'd so there is no lag to overcome. His V8 will pull hard too, it's not like you are racing a peaky honda S2000 or something.
You still haven't said whether you have a tune to maximize your mods. What year it your S197? Manual, auto? What gears, 3.31s or 3.55s?
I honestly don't think your 35+ lbft of torque at certain rpms is going to better his 100+ hp advantage that he has over you for a significant span of rpms, they make 314 ftlbs at 6k so they have a good amount of torque.
Lolo, I don't race alot from a dig but spinning the tires doesn't take much. Now spinning them in the dry at 50mph, maybe if I stomp on it in 2nd but from third on good flat warm payment, I can't, it just goes.
Lastly, vsop you make a good point about the price point of the RS4, its a niche car, their production numbers are low, I'm sure they have enough buyers though. I would imagine the age thing falls in line with the earning potential of 40 vs. 25 year olds. I asked about why audi is leaving turbo power and they say it is due to emissions and that their competition, namely BMW and Mercedes is NA or SC and running larger displacement motors. You are right though, their modibility is gone now.

RE: how are the Rs4 vs mustang ??
vsop,
yes the mercs are the fastest of the three germans (audi, bmw, merc) in just about every price point of the AMG cars. But where the bmw and audi fight back is in price and when the road turns. The mercs are brutally fast in a straight line.
However, the RS4 should be targeting the new BMW M3 V8 and the C55 AMG. These three won't go 11s but the SL63, CL63, SL600 etc. can go 11's with minimal effort. But those cars cost twice as much as the RS4, M3, C55 AMG.
But to answer Lolo question about the S8 audi you have to factor in weight at some point. Sure it has a 500 hp V10 from the lambo gallardo but the car weighs 4400+ lbs and was built for high speed cruising not stop light to stop light action. So I guess the mustang would be a good match. Just make sure you are racing in the dry.
