How much does it knock off of the 0-60 time?

I also have 285's on the rear of mine. The weight of the tires and wheels added extra weight that I could feel.

I then had 3.73's, water pump and UDP installed all at once. Those mods made quite a difference.

There is no right or wrong choice for gears, it is a personal preference. I have a supercharger and should be pushing just under 500hp to the wheels. I'm running 4.10:1 gears and love it. For someone to say if you are going to supercharge it, go with 3.73:1 gears is just not a complete statement. The question is, what do you want out of it. For example, if you are going to race 1/4 mile, you have to do the math and see how much gear you can use at the hp level of your car. At almost 500rwhp, running 4.10:1 gears I will not redline the tach before hitting the traps in 4rth gear (no overdrive). Now if I was pushing 600rwhp, I would have to make my gear selection accordingly. For racing, you want to use the lowest gear (highest ratio) possible without redlining your 1:1 transmission gear.

If you don't race the car and it's just a street car, it depends on how you drive AND your preference. Some people don't like to have their engine spinning at 3,000rpms, others keep it there. That is where you're getting to peak torque and power. You just have to talk it through with a knowledgable person and make sure they know everything you want out of it. Then they can make a good recommendation but to make simple statements like 4.10:1 gears for a NA or not over 3.73:1 for a supercharged is not good information.

Just a side note, the second number on the tires in the casee of 285/40/18 is not a measurement in millimeters. It is an aspect ratio that is affected by the 1rst number 285 which is the millimeters of the width and the inner diameter 18". It does represent the tire height from the tip of the wheel to the top of the tire but it isn't a measurement in millimeters. -Joe

This subject really has been beaten to death but it just won’t die. I have an auto and went with 3.73 gears because I do a lot of highway driving and I will be going FI with TT next month. I think the 3.73 is the best overall gear for the auto unless you just want to run at the track. With 3.73 and 255/45/18 rear tires I turn 2500 rpm at 75 mph where I normally cruise. This is a very nice rpm for highway cruising, with 4.10 gears the rpm would be about 2800. While 300 rpm doesn’t sound like much it really makes a difference after a while. If you want to get a feel for 4.10’s just hit 75 mph and take the overdrive off. This is about the rpm you would cruise at with 4.10’s.

Good reply Earl and it is obvious that your choice is heavily weighted by your driving which has a good bit of highway time. For another person with the exact same car they might choose a lower gear because they like to have the engine turning more into the power at that speed or they race 1/4 mile and want to effectively gear for the race. I'm just trying to say there are MANY things that have to be taken into consideration and personal preference and driving style plays a big role in the selection. People throwing out generic statements don't really "help" anyone. -Joe

jbailer, that is exactly what I was trying to indicate in the follow up post to yours. Before you can decide what gear to run you have to decide what you want to do with the car. There isn’t any universal gear choice for either the auto or manual. It all depends on what you expect of the car.

if you can survive with out overdrive at all then have 5.22s installed

4.6 are modular motors, so them reving at 2800 rpms is nothing, like a honda almost[8D][:'(]

one more Q! how much hp am i loosing with 3.73s or 4.10s, and knowing that they both perform so well down low, how do they perform in the higher gears, and lets say from a40 mph dig?
