Well, for me im usually driving around town in 3rd and sometimes 4th depending on the road. On the freeway its always in 5th, but if the rpm gets below 2000 then I will down shift into 4th to get the rpm's back up and reduce drone in the cab. Under 2000 rpm 5th is pretty much useless in my opinion.

ok, let me ask you pros a question...

with your manal trans. stangs, do you try to keep it in the highest gear possible at all times (i mean without killing rpms)

when saving gas?
Yup. When I'm just commuting and not sporting the car I usually up shift earlier than normal and down shift later.

My rule of thumb is to keep it at medium to high rpm (3k - 4.5k) so that I can access the available torque instantly. I don't generally shift below 3k but above 4.5k is for "competitive" open-road driving. The car gets very raucous in that area -- especially with the Magnaflows -- and doing it in neighborhoods just to be the first at the next red light could get me labelled as "the asshat in the Mustang". The car doesn't like low revs, though; I'll rev itpretty harshly on the open road but for commuting Ilike to find a sweet spot between "lively" and "obnoxious".

is the a reason that all of you seem to not use 5th unless on the highway because if i'm not racing i'm in 5th at 45+ mph

Yes this is about what I am doing also. I don't see the need to be ready to jump on it all the time. I will agree that the car sounds better, with stingers, cruising in 4th though

For best MGP i shift around 2000rpm after first. I will shift to second around 2200-2500. I will start in second sometimes too. First lasts about 1 second when more than feathering the gas to 2000.

I think I allready have that label. I'm not worried though because I can't stand 99% of the people where I live. They're either white trash or snow birds. I really need to move.

Two modes of driving for me: 1) Speed, 2) Mileage.

Speed: 4500 - 5500+ rpm
Mileage: 2250 - 3250 rpm

I usually don't shift into 5th unless on a fairly long cruise and traffic is light 'cause I like having the extra torque in 4th to maneuver in traffic.

"Mileage" for me is not necessarily trying to get optimal mileage but rather trying to get something better than "Speed".
