Its a shame...the GTO failed because of its styling. Mustang all the way.

Don't do it. I bought a '05 LS2 GTOM6 new, and just sold it with about 28k miles on it. Its a lot more powerful than the '05 GT that I just bought. The GTO felt like a V8. I hate to say it, but the GT just sounds like a V8 (and it does sound good). The 1/4 mile times don't dothe GTOjustice because it's so hard to launch with the IRS and skinny tires (small wheelwells). Also, it heat soaks real bad and pulls a lot of timing (50 hp or more). In cool air, it feels much more powerful (I broke the tiresloose at 40-45 mph in 2nd all the time just by punching the gas), but its not worth it.

Those cars can have a lot of problems, and since they only made ~35,000 of them over 3 years, parts are very difficult and expensive to get (aftermarket or OEM). There's no good way to really improve the looks either. Most people don't even know what they are. They don't look bad, they just don't look good. I used to be a GM guy, but now I really have no bias either way. The one good thing about them is that they've lost a lot of value (I sold mine for $19.5k), and they are quite a value for hp/$, if that's all you care about. Don't do it, overall the Mustang is a better car, aside from the drivetrain. Wish I could get the LS2/T56 in my GT...The GTOeven got better gas mileage than my GT (but required premium gas).

The new gto is not worthy of the badge. To me it will always be a marketing excercise by pontiac. A holden monero plain and simple. As a 67 gto owner, nothing would have made me happier than to buy a new GTO to drive every day.

Problem is. Looks not even being a factor, and they are absolutly horrible. I did not like the performance of the car. It pushed, it rolled, it was mushy, had harrible steering and brake feedback, narrow little tires, ugly rims, more wheel hop than my 67.

To top it off, the car was slow. Certainly a lot slower than my goat. Maybe a bit quicker than the stang, but nothing out of this world.

That stang looked right, sounded right, and went rather well. That was enough for me.

2004, no way, its crap. Plus look at the variety of appearance upgrades for your stang as well, compared to barely anything with the gto-what, a ram air hood? Ican replace every part on my mustang with some sort of upgrade just about. I am also quicker than the 04 gto with just minimal things, and can hang with an 05-06. Just because its got 6 gears doesnt mean its faster... Chevy tried to come back at the Cobra, but ended up wasting their money...the 05-06s are a little quicker than a GT, but with that IRS, I dont like it, A guyin my townalready snapped a CV going 5, yes 5 miles per hour!

There was an AP picture in the paper fridayof a dozen or so "UNSOLD"
GTO's,at a dealership,along with a story about GM.
I thought they were G6's or whatever they call them untill I read the story.
The car suffers from "Jellybean" design.

Carroll Shelby once said,
"The name will not make the car, THE car will make the name"

The fact you asked this question on a Mustang forum tells you not many would give you the GTO side. All I can say is that I used to own a 65 and a 70 Goat, couple of the best looking. And I think the new GTO looks like crap. Just like most of the cars on the road. You can't beat the looks of the new style Mustang. But if power is what you care about get a Shelby or a Saleen or Roush.
