The difference between having one gallon and 16 gallons in your tank is about 120 lbs. If you don't think it will make a difference, then don't worry about it. Personally, if I wanted to run as fast as possible, I would not want to be carrying an extra 110-120 lbs.

+1 to that. You want to be as light as possible to make the fastest run.
Think about how fast you can run carrying 10lbs versus 75lbs.

The advantages to weight reduction are discussed in this article
http://www.tprmag.com/issue/16/light_club.shtml

They do a comparison on a 350Z which is similar in weight and power to an S197 mustang. The results show that a weight savings of 100 lbs on a 300 hp, 3600 lb vehicle will result ina theoretical effectivegain of approximately 9 horsepower. Conversely, to add 100 lbs (as in unnecessary fuel) will effectively cost you 9 horsepower. Not huge maybe, but why throw away 9 horsepower (or less, depending on your fuel load) when simply managing the amount of fuel you are carrying to the track is easy to do and best of all, it's FREE!

Someone posted before that if you let it get to close to empty the car will cut back on timing or something though. Thus not produced all HP possible. It might have been Crazy but I can not remember.

Yes take out the subs and amps. If possible take out the wires. Atleast disconnect from battery so you dont have any extra parasitic loss of power. I have an extreme audio/video setup in my car and taking it all out usually cuts 4 tenths of my time.
