2nd gear burnout
yesterday at the track, the anoying guy thatsays a lot of stupid thingsthe whole night, said something about V8 guys should do their burnouts in 2nd gear instead of first, he said that that way you get more traction or something like that. first of all, whatdoes getting more traction mean? how do you do this, do you start burning in first then go down to second? is this even true?

Actually, you should do your burnout in second gear. You will get more wheel speed in second gear allowing the tires to get hotter, faster. He actually gave you good advice.

RE: 2nd gear burnout
Actually fellas - the annoying doofus is correct. There are a bunch of reasons/opinions on this. It's especially a good idea for guys in fox's w/ t-5's becauseof the short 3.35 first gear. If you talk to some seasoned racers, regardless of make or tranny type, this is a good idea. Here are some reasons -
1. The object is to get some heat into the tires. By doing your burnout in 2nd gear, you are turning the tires slower and progressively getting the heat into them. In first gear you are more likely to get them TOO hot (yes it's possible), at which point they can get greasy and make you spin at launch. Many people cry about spinning with good tires not knowing that their burnout technique is likely the reason.
2. When you pull out of the bleach box with the tires spinning at the lower rpm of second gear, you are putting less strain on your axles when the tires grab the asphalt. Mustangs didn't always come with 31 spline axles you know
3. It's easier on your motor. Believe it or not we don't all need to see your pretty face lit up by your shift light while you do your burnout. It's really not necessary to wind the motor up to 6k to get the tires sticky.
4. It's easier on your slicks. You paid good money for those tires and you want them to last. Again, it's about what's necessary. Some guys think you're not done until there's a huge cloud of smoke out the back. In second gear they are spinning slower and you are wasting considerably less tread. Everybody wants to look like John Force. It's silly.
5.getting the tires too hot jacks up the air pressure. by now you know that dialing in your tire pressure is crucial.
6. consistency. you want consistency to track your progress. a good controlled burnout is just as important as a good stage and a good 60ft.
If none of this is enough for you - try it out. i guaruntee you will see an improvement at the track.

that is exactly what he said "you will get more wheel speed, allowing the tires to get hotter, witch will give you more traction"wow other than anoying he is saying the truth when he tells guys"bring that thing over here i'llteachyou how to drive it". ok so how do you do this? start burning on first then shift down to second and burn more? or just start the car in second gear and burn
