Default 18 Inch Tire Size

What would be better to use. 235-50-18 or 255-45-18? Car is not raced and is used for mostly crusing in good weather. Thanks.

Is this an 18x9 or 18x10? If its 18x9 than 255/45/18 is the standard size tire. If its 18x10 than 275/40/18 is the standard size tire. If you have any questions about this check out www.americanmuscle.com and click on the rims/tires section, find your rim you want and it will give the tires that best suite that size rim.

255/45/18 will provide a good balance between ride quality and handling on the 18x8.5" wheels.

235/50/18 will fitbut you would be sacrificing ride quality for handling.

I don't think you'll notice a whole lot of difference in ride qualtiy, but you should notice a little better performance out of the 255's. I'd say if one is a bit less expensive....just go with that size. The 255's will look a little meaner though.

As I understand it the 45 will have less side wall than the 50 which means less give in the tire side wall which leads to less ride quality but with the wider tire(P255) you should get better performance. If just cruising probably not much difference.

Tires have a rim width range specified by the tire manufacturer.

From Yokohama's Understanding Your Tires:

Choosing a wheel near the middle of the range will give a balance between ride quality and handling. A wider wheel will improve handling at the expense of ride quality, while a narrower wheel will improve ride quality at the expense of handling. Consider these compromises when selecting wheels.

Generally, an 8-9.5" rim width is specified for255/45/18's but you should consult the manufacturers specs.

I run Nitto 555's,255/45/18 on 18x9" wheels. Nitto recommends an 8-9.5" wheel.

waykooljr,
The dealer upgraded them from a 17" rim to an 18" rim, does that make them factory?
