JLTII and Tuner Track Times. Very Unimpressed/Confused
First off, let me say that I am NOT bashing B.amachips. Excellent customer service, Doug is a great guy work with so far, it was the testimony of many here that steered me his way. After seeing the gains many of you all had made with Doug, and taking into account what a standard SCT or Diablo Sport tune can offer, I was geeked.
Two weeks ago I went to the track with my 100% bone stock 2007 Mustang GT. Dirty paper filter and, 3,000 mile old Motorcraft 5w20 oil. 3.31 gears, 5-speed manual, 18" polished stock Bullitt rims.
Temperature: High 50's
Humidty: Very low, 30%
1/2 tank of 93 octane
Shift point- 6300rpm
Best Time:
60ft: 2.131
330ft: 5.890
1/8th: 8.922 @ 81.20mph
1000: 11.521
1/4: 13.692@ 104.34mph
A week later I ordered a JLTII Cold Air Kit, and B.amachip's 87 Performance, 93 Torque, and 93 Performance Octane Tune with SCT X-Cal 2 tuner.
When I installed the performance tune with the kit last weekend, it felt great. Felt like it was running stronger than before. Over that last few days it has been a bit warmer and humid, and has felt a little less heroic. I figured that might be to me just getting used to it.
Today is was much cooler, 70 degrees for a high. Went to the track tonight. By the time I got there it was in the mid 60's, humidity around 40%. Sun was going down, and it was getting cooler. By the time it was dark out, it felt as if it had cooled down a bunch. This time I had about 1/4 tank of gas, mabe a little bit less. Figured less weight.
Here are the results of the best rune with each tune, allowing 20-30 minutes cool down between runs. I would run two runs back to back, then let it sit for 20-30 minutes. All shifts were made at around 6300rpm:
87 Octane Performance Tune:
60ft: 2.098
330ft. 5.928
1/8th: 8.973 @ 80.97mph
1000: 11.585
1/4: 13.765 @ 103.92mph
Car ran SLOWER than it did without the kit and tune.
93 Octane Torque Tune:
60ft: 2.114
330: 5.841
1/8: 8.824 @ 82.72mph
1000: 11.388
1/4: 13.539 @ 105.18
An improvement of .16 and .84mph over stock. How much of that is a credit to the improved 60ft time, it's anyones guess.
93 Octane Performance Tune:
60ft: 2.077 (got a good launch, hooked nicely)
330: 5.839
1/8: 8.848 @ 82.07mph
1000: 11.430
1/4: 13.593 @ 104.67mph
An improvement of .10 and .34mph over stock. All of the gain should be attributed to the better 60ft time.
Extrapolating this data from my past runs in factory stock form, I have added about 5hp.
After seeing what improvements others have gained with a tune and a cold air kit, I would call my results atypical at best.
Anyone have any ideas? Have you experienced similar "results" from a cold air kit and tuner? Is there anything I could be doing during the loading process that would be affecting it? The car runs fine, idles fine, no pinging, etc. It just feels...well, not that fast now for some reason. On one run tonight, it just felt like it just fell on it's face when I hit 3rd gear.
I plan to e-mail and/or call Doug on Tuesday (or tomorrow)to see if there's any suggestions he has or if he can e-mail some tunes or something. Looking at my old time slip to this one, it just dosen't make sense.Again, I'm not mad, angry, or going to start cutting myself, this just kind of has me baffled. It seems anyone else who adds a cold air kit and tuner picks up .40-.50 and 4-5mph. My car has picked up next to nothing, the only real gains coming from a better 60ft time. Thoughts???

RE: JLTII and Tuner Track Times. Very Unimpressed/Confused
First off, anyone who says they're getting a gain of .4-.5seconds in the 1/4 mile with just an intake/tune, is lying. You might see a .2-.3 second gain, but .4-.5 is out of the question. Another question, why were you running 93 octane without a 93 octane tune when you were stock? You were basically just wasting gas the whole time, which if you dont mind than I guess its ok. I would say your 60' times are decent, and with stock tires I dont think you'll get that much of an improvement. Now where as you only knocked .16 and .10 off your 1/4 mile times, I have no idea. I would think you would have atleast gotten into the 13.4 range, but I could be wrong. Like you said your already gonna do, contact Doug and let him no whats up. Did you happen to mess with your air/fuel ratio and all that stuff, or did you just install the CAI, plug in your SCT and tune it for the octanes?

These cars run better when you put better than regular in them. Not a ton, butfor me, I've always gotten 1 or 2mpg better, and it just seems to run crisper, so I put that in when I go to the track. I'm sure some will argue until they're blue in the face thatI'm just"wasting gas", but whatever.Plus I wanted to make sure I had all of the regular burned off by the time I got the intake and tune installed.
Did not alter any perameters. Put the JLT on, plugged in the tuner:
Install Tune?
(Select)
Select Tune
(Enter 93 Performance)
Change Parameters?
(Cancel)
Turn Key ON/Do Not Start
Erasing Module
Downloading ECM
Turn Key Off
Press Select
(Select)
Then I'm done, correct?
As for the gain, yeah, .30 was about what I was expecting on the low-end.
I got like .10 with better 60ft times than before (not the result of the kit), and not even 1mph improvement. That's why I'm questioning the results. Plus it ran slower with the 87 Performance tune in it than it did bone stock, without even a K&N filter in it, and I ran a better 60ft time on that run. I doubt I'm spinning through 2nd gear to make that much ofa difference.

I dont know exactly how the tuner works once you plug it in, mainly because I've never had one. But I do know its pretty self-explanatory and it should be a breeze to install and tune with the intake and tuner. I honestly dont know why your not getting the gain you should. About the 93 octane, I've always heard its a waste to put in, and its a waste to put any octane in but 87, unless of course you have the tune for the 91 or 93. In both my 01 GT and 05 GT I've never used anything but 87. Anyways man, I would just call up Bamachips and make sure your doing everything right and maybe they'll send you another tune or 2 to see if it fixes the problem. And another KEY thing about going to the track, is that the track temperatures and the track conditions could have been way different than before, so dont let that go in your mind of what could be wrong.

13.5 with 3.31 gears is pretty respectable IMO. I would think with 3.73's or 4.10's you should hit 13.2 or 3. UDP's might also help.

Went to the track for the first time and could only muster a 14.1 @ 100 bone stock with a 2.1 60 foot. Just went back after installing a JLT II cai and branspeed 93 tune and i got a 13.6 @ 106 with an identical 60 foot time to the stock run. Temperatures were actually a little hotter on the 13.6 run compared to the stock run. The tune seemed to help my times out alot so im not sure what the problem is with your tune.

You cannot accurately compare the 'before and after' race track performanceof a stock tune/intake and a non-stock tune/intake by running on different days with different atmospheric conditions.
In order to get the most accurate results, you havetomake all of the runs around the same time on the same day either before orafter sunset. And since you're allowing the car to cool for 20-30 minutes between runs, you'll have plenty of time to switch between the stock and aftermarket intakes.
