The G-tech has three an internal INU that reads acceleration. It inegrates once over the acceleration to get velocity and twice to read distace traveled. It does not work off of the specometer. It does use 12V power from the cigarette lighter and looks at the noise in the DC power to get RPM.
This is all my personal assumption, not researh but I feel very comfortable making this assumption, just don't quote me as fact.
Several magazines have done rightups on this product and have found them to be very accurate. It is a great tool for comparison and testing.

I'm curious what it would read if you had a lot of tire spin in 1st, 2nd? It doesn't know the tires are spinning right? So it thinks you are moving forward. At any rate they are way overpriced IMHO. I'd rather pay $20 and go to the track, where I can't get a ticket.

i have an intake and a tune............run was pretty decent, but not my best. launch, bogged a tiny bit but no real spin to speak of, just a little chirp, 2nd gear just did a big chirp, no real spin, and 3rd gear was a barely audible scratch. my shifts were really fast; grabbed 2nd gear @ 6300, 3rd @ 6450.
i could probably do better with more practice. the run really was pretty good actually, i just think i could do better
also, keep in mind, i had 265 extra pounds in the car.

I would be wary of trusting the time. Accelerometers tend to show time slightly off what a real track will show, however, the MPH will be more accurate. I ran a G-tech unit at the drags one night (in a customers Vette) just to compare and the G-tech was consistantly about .10 to .15 seconds quicker than the time slip, but the MPH was more consistant with what my datalogging was showing... It did this consistantly thru about 12 runs.
