Doug’s tunes are very good and I’m sure he would give you an update for the new TC. Getting an actual tune on the dyno will usually make a little increase in performance and the peace of mind that you’re A/F ratios are correct but a lot depends on the ability of the guy doing the tuning. For a NA car I think it would be a toss up, as to value, for how much better a dyno tune would be than Doug’s tunes.

If you could keep Doug’s tune in the car and just have the dyno guy modify it you would have the best of both worlds but that isn’t possible. Doug really has the auto figured out and not many guys can tune it as well as he can. You might end up with more HP from the dyno tune but the actual drivability would not be as good because of the auto characteristics.

Baha,
At high speeds the transmission catches up with the engine and almost goes the same speed, this difference in speed wastes power.

A lock up torque converter has a clutch that locks the two halves of the TC(pump and turbine) together when they getup tospeed. The clutch eliminates slippage and improves efficiency.
Then why would TC manufacturers sell non-lockup ones? and why Ford didn't put a lock-up TC in the first place in our cars? I feel stupid asking these Qs but I'd appreciate any feedback

I have been telling you guys for years that auto guys should have a TC as one of their top 3 on their mod list...lol

As for the best? The TCI is good as Ron testified but I personally think the PI Multi disc is the best one hands down.

Yeah, but the PI multidisk sells for $1100, the TCI $630. I wanted to go for the TCI but since I'm planning going F/I in the future, the PI multidisk is the one to go for.....unless the TCI can handle it? I'm talking about 550+RWHP

BTW what's the difference between the Lock-up and non-lockup converter? (I don't have a clue on how the TC operates)

I would think a TC won't be your only concern with a stock motor pushing 550+ RWHP.

I want a torque converter now... prices? maybe 400 ta 700??? I will probably just update the tune with Doug because I am VERY happy with his tune currently... I can only imagine how much more it would help the car if he has the auto figured out to drive like a dream...

Baha,
TC manufacturers came out with the lock up TC back in like 1949 (correct me if I am wrong) But it cost more for manufacturers to put them in vehicles. Probably why they didn't use them a lot.

The only thing that the lock up converter does is improve cruising/fuel efficiency when operating at higher speeds.

But with "gas shortages" there is more of a demand and they are used more often.

so how much does a TC run for? would a $630 do a good job compared to a $1100 TC? I dont want to spend a grand on a torque converter when I can get one for 600... What is the difference in quality?

For those with a TC, how does it change the way your car feels around town? How does your car behave differently in daily driving? Is there anyhting you need to get used to?

Default RE: Torque Converter Again?

I had my TC built by Hughes Performance. A local performance torque converter / transmission manufacturer here in the Phoenix area. I had it built with stronger internals and with a higher stall speed then stock for improved launch and power through my increased torque band. It feels a little loose in the lower rpm range but when It gets up in the 3000 to 6000 RPM area watch out. It will lock up in 3rd, 4th, and 5th to help with slippage and fuel economy. I also had the Performance Transmission deep sump pan W/ dipstick installed along with a larger trans fluid cooler out in front of my intercooler heat exchanger. The stock trans cooler is paper thin and sandwiched in between the radiator and the air conditioning condenser. Remember HEAT KILLS transmissions.

With this new set-up I should be in the mid 11's

Good Luck with your decision
