ORIGINAL: Black06GT40324

rotating mass hurts . . . and it changes your gear ratio . . .
LARGER RIMS DO NOT CHANGE YOUR GEAR RATIO!!!! only if the tires you purchase are a larger diameter than the stock wheels which the diameter is 27.2. the most common size for 20" rims is 255/35/20 which is a 27" diameter. thats not enough to change your gear ratio.

I'm sorry I dont know much about the technical side of the issue, I just never cared for them on the S197's.

All depends on the wheels fitted. For example my friend lost 52lbs of weight on the wheels by changing from a 16" stock wheel adn tyre to a 17" wheel with semi slick tyres. Made quite a big difference and as rotating radius was identical speedo was spot on.

If you have chrome wheels chances are yes there hurting your performance. If you went with a light weight 20" set they could possibly be lighter than the stock 18's if you get some decent lightweight wheels.

I HATE 20's on s197's.... People say "they really set off the car" yeah well I just think they look horrible. The ONLY 20 acceptable is a chrome or black bullitt, but still not even close to worth it for the performance loss.

20's kill performance. You can feel it the first time you drive the car. I really like how they look and that makes it up for me. I also have a vert whcih is also a performance killer in the extra weight. Ride is stiffer, but car does handle better with smaller and stiffer bfg sidewalls.

the same can be said for a lighter wheel.
I myself was looking at some ultra light 18 and 19's which SHOULD weigh less then my stock 17's

www.tirerack.com has a nice set of ASA AR1's in 18' which look like the FR500 mustang wheels.
they weigh 23lb's per wheel on 18 x 8

|SIDEBAR| what do the Stock 17's on a GT weigh?

To each their own, but I just don't like the look. Stock 18s are as big as I think looks right, never mind the performance and logistic problems.
