Default the S197 cries out for gears. gears are too long.

so doing some single-gear pulls tonight (2nd and third gear, starting at about 2500 RPM) and its just become so apparent to me that this car just screams for a set of steeper gears. im talking like it should have come with 3.90's from the factory; to better suit the engine's powerband characteristics. the gears are good for like a regular track run, shifting at redline, WOT, but for just torqueing around, and to just punch it, it seriously needs steeper gears. which is why as soon as i have the chance, i want to get 4.30's.

people with 4.10's or 4.30's, what do you think?

also, it seems like this car has wayyyyyyyyyyy too much driveline slack for its own good. is this mostly due to the two piece driveshaft? because i really think it affects throttle response.

Do you mean shorter gears? But yeah 3.73s should have been a minimal with an option for 4.10s(3.90s tend inherantlyto whine by design from what I hear).

the reason you hear that is because FRPP doesn't make 3.90's, most people go with Motive gears, and Motive gears tend to wine. However, my buddy Donnie's car (Norse1974) has Motive 3.90's, and they're dead silent.

I have heard of motives being silent but it seems to be few and far in between. But they can be silent. Honestly I think the two main things that makes these cars whine so bad are the carrier and two-piece D/S. After I put my trutrac in my gear whine was reduced by about 30%. A week later I put in my spydershaft and the only time I hear any whine is on decel and its very faint, about 80% quieter than it was before those two mods.

If you can hear the "gear" whine, your car isn't loud enough imho.

4.30's are in my future too. I'll race ya. [&:]

I would have loved it if 3.73s were an option. The stock gears suck and I need to get new ones so bad but being in central Kansas there aren't too many places at all that I would trust putting them in. That and since they no there is no competition they will rape you on install price. I'm moving in a year though thankfully so if anyone is around thesan luisobispoarea let me know.

410s and powerhouse DS here and it is a hoot...great combonation...If you have this combo with no suspension mods your going to be lighting up tires all the time but once you do LCAs they stick to the ground great. Makes it very streetable.I have an UCA and panhard I need to install so once I do that this car should be totally planted on the pavement. It rips!!
