it could also be the belt slipping. or all of the above. i wold go with its hot as hell,so your loosing timing, and you belt is slipping anyway, and little do you know,, you gauge is off

As everyone has mentioned......hot air =less dense air. The colder you make the air going through your intercooler, the more dense it becomes and hence.....the more you get to the combustion chamber[8D].
