Harmonic Balancer BROKE!!!!!!!!!

Harmonic Balancer BROKE!!!!!!!!!
So last night I hammered it around a turn... and the car just fell flat on its face.... I couldnt steer... No boost... I had thrown the belt... SO today thinkin it was going to be no big deal, undid the tension and went to go reinstall the belt.... HOWEVER.... I found the harmonic balancer had seperated from the crank pulley and had walked about 1.5" out towards the radiator... I couldnt beleve my eyes. Has anyone ever heard of that happening.. supposedly old chevy's usta seperate at the damper inside the balancer quite often... Good thing it didnt come Zinging off at the track last weekend....
Anyone have any idea whats a good crank pulley to run with a blower car? I have a lightened undersized one on the shelf however, it will lower the overall boost amount. ( since changing the crank pulley size affects boost).I have a vortech 10 psi HO kit on the car currently.... ANy suggestions?

RE: Harmonic Balancer BROKE!!!!!!!!!
There is another guy on a different forum that had a kb installed and the balancer seperated about 3/4" off the pulley. He went with an aftermarket balancer after the incident, just to let you know it isnt only you that had this problem. I guess the added power can make the two pieces slip apart right where the metal and rubber parts meet. You will probably want to go with an aftermarket balancer such as ATI.

RE: Harmonic Balancer BROKE!!!!!!!!!
Yep. That damper's (it's not a balancer!) materials aren't designed to handle the extra load you're placing on it with a blower. So, they sometimes separate. You can try an aftermarket damper, but be cautioned that those dampers, whether they're SFI approved or not, do NOT provide the proper damping frequencies for your engine. You may end up having bearing and/or oil pump problems if those frequencies aren't cancelled out.
At the end of the day, this is another one of those "you gotta pay to play" issues. Sorry.
