Clutch/Flywheel

Lighter is not always better. Do some google search on aluminum vs. steel flywheel or light weight vs. heavy flywheel. A heavier flywheel can keep your revs from dropping when shifting, if you power shift then that's not that big a deal, but I don't want to leave any part of my transmission on the track. A heavier flywheel can also help your launch believe it or not. Where the lightweight shines is towards the end of the 1/4 mile or in a road race course.

It's true that a Steel flywheel will allow for harder launches. It's weight creates more inertia than an aluminum flywheel once it gets going. It's still personal preference though on which one to run. For the most part we sell aluminum over steel by 10 to 1. Most shops or others will say Alum is better on the street and Steel is better for the track but we've seen both work great either way. I've got customers that run Steel on daily driver street cars which swear by them and then there's a large majority that swear by the aluminum. I'm running a Ram Twin disc with the upgraded 900 series discs in my car. That kit as well as all the other Ram twin kits come with an Aluminum flywheel. So do most other twin kits such as Spec and Fidanza but that really doesn't mean that Alum is better.
Good discussion though. You'll be surprised how many people have their own reason for running one or the other.

Thanks guys! This is a great forum everyone is helpful and there isnt much flaming.
I think im going to go Spec II with the steel flywheel, the shop is going to call me today and tell me what they found in their search for parts i need. (What kind of ford dealership doesnt have any replacement clutches in stock?)

RE: Clutch/Flywheel
My installer wants me to go twin disc. I might make alot of money but that doesn't mean I need to spend it all. I was thinking of a Stage 3 version with a steel fly wheel. It seems to me the steel wouldl ast a little longer and be more apt to handle abuse. I haven't researched yet but I plan on it.

RE: Clutch/Flywheel
Just ordered SPEC stage 2 and the SPEC aluminum flywheel
Not too pumped for break in but really excited to test it all out
how much of a driving difference (if any) did you guys notice over stock with the SPEC aluminum flywheel. It is supposed to rev faster right?

RE: Clutch/Flywheel
The aluminum fly wheel seems to make the car much more smooth between shifts if that makes any sense. Also when down shifting into corners it is not so jerky when you let out the clutch. Thats about the best way I can describe it.
