Default Custom Exhaust

I have a few exhaust questions.
So who here has a custom exhaust?
Whats the difference between stock h-pipe and aftermarket?

Is there something specific you're looking for that you cannot find in the tons of choice for aftermarket exhausts out there?

The aftermarket H's don't have cats. Aftermarket X's come with and without cats, or let you keep your factory cats.

Yah look at the title. What I am getting at is I want to build a custom exhaust. I mean how hard is it really? I am a welder, I can weld. It's just small pipe. Why spend like $200 when I can spend like $20?

So what is it that makes the power increase? the lack of cats?

Not sure what your defining as custom exhaust. I didn't like the tone of O/R pipes. Sounds like a loud fart to me. Plus I don't like the sound with most axlebacks. So I kept mine catted. I used MRT's catted H. Then I put in a couple of Magnaflow round straight through mufflers, deeper sound IMO. I just had a muffler shop cuttout a section of the over/axle pipes and clamp these in.

Previously I had another muffler set, made by ClassicChamberedExhaust. These went up under the middle of the car. Just a little too loud even with a catted H.

But I'm getting ready to buy JBA LT with an O/R H. I contacted MRT and they sell they're magnaflow cats that they put on their H pipe for $50 a piece. So guess you could say my exhaust is a mutt....or soon to be.

yes the lack of cats does produce more power. but the problem lies in the cats are so close to the exhaust manifolds, its gonna be hard to cut them out and replace w/ pipe.

Pair Onderful's answer with the fact that removing the cats doesn't really yield that much more power but it does make your car illegal in just about every state.

I live in Canada cops or the governmnent do not care.
What I mean by custom exhaust is not store bought, I make it. Just make something similar to the store bought ones for 1/10th the price. It shouldnt be hard I do this stuff for a living, just not on cars.

Well, in that case, I'd say just go for it. All you need is some 3" stainless steel pipe, a mandrel, and some welding equipment right? As long as it doesn't leak, and you have to deactivate the rear o2 sensors or else it will through a CEL at you.

I have a custom made x-pipe with Magnaflow MagnaPaks welded on mid muffler style...ending up with 4" tips. I love it...everyone likes how it sounds...can't complain.

Dont forget that some of the power gain is from having mandrel bent tubing. If you are making it yourself, thats great. I have a shop, and could have made it myself as well. But it would not have been stainless and would easily rust away, it would have been crush bent, it can come out REAL easy, and I get it at dealer price.
