Tuner Question - How much difference between canned tunes and custom tunes
I am going to get a CAI and tuner within the next couple of weeks. Most likely will get C & L intake with the Diablo Predator. A local speedshop handles those lines and I would rather trade locally. The predator comes with a number of preset tunes for different variables like intake, octane level, gears, etc. I have also read about the custom Brenspeed tunes (and other vendors as well). Two questions: How much difference between the canned tunes already on the tuner and these custom tunes? To get the custom tunes do you just email the tuner (Brenspeed for example),provide a charge cardfor payment, and they email a file back to you? How does it get downloaded to the tuner? Do you have to hook up a laptop to the tuner via a USB connection or something?
Thanks for the input.

I went from a canned Diablosport tune to a Bamachips race tune and the difference was huge. I would highly recommend a Bamachips race tune, they're worth it. Especially now since they are only $50.

+1 to what acascianellisaid. And yes, you order the tune online and get an email back with the tune file attached. From there you download the tune file from computer to Predator (I use a USB to serial cable with mylaptop). I use the laptop since I do not have a power cable for the Predator. You can download from a desktop computer, butneeda power source in addition to the USB/serial cable.
(I am currently running the Predator's canned 93 octane tune -I will get three new tunes from Bamachips once I get my CAI)

I'd rather have a custom dyno tune. It's vehicle specific and a better application IMHO. These tuner guys are only applying R/D from cars they dynotuned and shooting those results to you. I'd rather be 100% sure on a custom tune my vehicle specific than guess on a mass produced/sold tune on my car "type". That's why dyno tunes cost what they do. they are time consuming but well worth it. So my order would be custom dynotune>Bama or similiar>canned tune..

It's amazing just what they can do without dyno tuning your car though. My Brenspeed tune is SICK! No other words for it. Def a big improvement over a canned tune.

Brenspeed or Bama is the way to go for a better tune. I know Bama has the automatics figured out to shift like a dream. I am sure Brenspeed is the same.
I would go with a custom dyno tune, its just I know that nobody near my area would come up with a better tune than what I got from Bama... and I am not trying to take a chance either.
