I don't know yet about the 4.6, but for all of my other engines I will actually overfill them by somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 quart

Ford is very specific about not over filling the engine oil. Just keep that in mind if you have an engine related problem and need to take it to the dealer for warranty work.

I can only imagine how much of that 1/2 quart ends up in your intake and combustion chamber.

Like I said, I don't know yet about the 4.6 engine. I'll be finding out shortly.

But if the top of the hash markings on the dipstick amounts to 6 point something quarts with the filter full and the oil hot I don't think I'll worry about filling it to 6 point whatever.

I'd guess that most factory recommendations are intentionally written conservatively just to keep some moron from dumping in an extra quart or more.

As far as where the "extra" oil goes - so far and in three different engines in cars from three different mfrs, and somewhere beyond 300,000 total miles it all seems to stay in the crankcase. Sometimes I'll have to add a little between changes, but usually I don't.

I know of a person who a few years ago got absolutely terrified that overfilling the oil on some new vehicle by 3 ounces was going to cause all sorts of unnecessary risk. I don't think he stopped to figure out that the oil level was less than 1/16" higher than spec.
