traction

I have a 99 GT and I have stock 5 spoks on it and nitto 555 all around, 255 40 17. Traction sucks, I take off normal and then punch it and they roast instantly. What brand of tire and what size should I get for my stock rims, I can only afford tires at this time so dont say get new rims.
thanks everybody Jason

Interesting... I though the Nitto 555 was specifically designed for straight line launches. Could your traction problems be because the 255/40s are a small (25"), low-profile tire? Going to a taller tire might help.

Does anyone else have any experience with the Nitto 555? Good or bad? I'm considering them, but only if they do what they claim (i.e. hook up for straight line launches)

the nito 555 is a decent launch tire, i know a guy with a 600+hp ls1 transam and he as them but his are quite a bit wider (335 i think) well he can roast them easily in the first 3 gears 4th chirps if shifted aggresivly. but its a good tire.

Seems Nitto disagrees with you regarding the 555 and 555R -- from their website:

"What does it take to get 350 horses and 365 lb-ft of torque to the ground? Grip - and lots of it. With one of the biggest contact patches available, the NT-555 provides superior traction, reliable handling, and delivers total vehicle control. On the street, that means the NT-555 will get you off the line quicker for the straights and will give you extreme confidence in the corners."

and

"Proven on the street and on the race track, the DOT approved NT555R drag radial allows you to drive your car to the strip and launch with extreme grip down the track - all without changing your tires."

Note the word "Domestic" and a picture of a couple Mustangs on their websites:

IMHO if you want the best traction and performance ( in the dry) you gotta go with Michelin Pilot Sports or Goodyear Eagle F1's. However they WILL cost you. Tires are one of those thing that you get what you pay for.
