Tire size for 18"s

I just bought a 2006 Mustang GT and I'm looking to buy some new wheels for it. Online places say the right tire size would be a 40 series tire with 18" wheels. Will the 40 series tires make it look like the car needs to be lowered? Will the tire fill the gap?

My car with 20's and the stock suspension still looks like it should be lowered. A 20 will be bigger than most performance tires and fill the gap if you are getting a wide tires.

255/45/18 are a good choice if you keep the stock wheels
