loose/metallic noise under car
For the past few weeks my '07 GT (14,000 miles) has been making a metallic vibration type noise from what I initially thought was the exhaust or something stuck or loose in the exhaust. The noise sounded basically like a few stones rattling around inside and would fade after the engine temperature settled down (or the parts heated up and expanded) and the car had been driven for maybe 5 minutes or so.
I had one place pull off the set of axle back pipes I had installed and he found basically nothing of note really. The noise got worse, if anything, or at least not louder but just more obvious. To me it sounded closer to right behind the drivers seat (but under the car of course) as opposed to way in the back.
The noise cannot be heard unless it's in gear and driven.
It starts around 2500 rpm and fades around 3000 rpm. I hear it from both sides of the car as I drive (meaning I can't really say for sure if it's on the left or right or both). If (seems) like it's directly under the middle of the car, and as I said, about midway back. Not front under the hood, not back where the pipes stick out.
No one can seem to figure it out. It's been up on several lifts, people knocking around things. One guy said he's certain it's the cat converter. One other says nah, couldn't be that or chunks would be coming out. He couldn't hear anything. The frustrating part is that no one seems to hear it except me and I just don't understand that because it makes me cringe everytime i pull away for work in the morning when the car is cold.
I'm a totally frustrated and not having the tools or equipment to deal with this on my own don't know where to go except back to Ford and say, keep the car.
Any ideas or insight would be appreciated.

I'll put my $$ on 1 of these 3:
[ol][*]exhaust clamps (even if they feel tight, torque 'em down)[*]exhaust hanger hitting frame[*]heat shield[/ol]
You can find all sorts of info on these (and others) by using the search function.

haha mines white...and i had the same thing [:'(]
the dealer claimed they dropped the tranny, replaced the spaced plate, or shield, whatever you want to call it...(in an hour)...but they just put silicone between the housing and the shield and the sound is gone...
Its really annoying!!

Ok, well I went to a Ford Deal in New York here (Scarsdale Ford on Central Avenue). Brought the receipt that one of the guys here provided (Huge Thanks! even though it wasn't directly for me).
The short story is that there is a TSB (?) if that's the correct term out from Ford, and they are being told to drop the transmission and replace or repair this plate between the engine and transmission under warranty.
So if any of you have this same problem, by all means get it over to your dealer and get it fixed. Unfortunatley it means I won't have my car for about a week but they're providing a rental free of charge for the duration
Anyway, thanks all. Still yet to be 100% determined I guess if this IS the noise and I won't know until it's all done... but hoepfully this is it
