PLEASE HELP WITH 4.6 TIMING! VIDEO INCLUDED
Hey guys, please view this video. Says everything.
I'm looked a bunch of how-tos and such, but none have made me confident enough in doing the TDC and removal of the timing stuff that I'm willing to do it without someone looking over my shoulder. That person is usually my uncle, but he wont come help so I'm on my own. This is the bulletin I'm referring to in the video: https://www.melling.com/wp-content/u...lling-AERA.pdf
Please let me know!!! This project has been held up wayyy too long, and I need to get it moving ASAP.
Thanks,
~DC

can't get much better than the ford workshop manual.

If you aren't able to be confident enough to do it with this, you may want to take it to a shop and have them do it.
Whatever you do, if you decide to tackle this yourself DO NOT rotate the crank or the cams with the chains removed unless expressly instructed to do so! If you do, not only do you risk a misalignment when reinstalling everything (timing will be off) but you can damage valves if they hit the piston.
Yes, even if you're only rotating the crank by hand.
Also, once you get everything back together (chains and all) it's a good idea to hand spin the crank (with spark plugs out) and make sure your timing isn't off. If the timing is off by more than a tooth (maybe even only one tooth) you'll get resistance or get stuck as the valve hits the piston at a certain point during the rotation.
The 4.6L is way easier to work on vs Ford's Duratec 3.0L v6 that is in the Escapes. That was NOT fun and had me sweating bullets.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I think you might be overthinking this a bit (which is not a bad thing). there is a tool that you put on the crank with the key in and you turn and align with a dowel that puts the crank key at 11:00. I believe that is the position of the crank that lets you spin the cams without doing damage. TDC happens twice in every combustion cycle, once at power and once at exhaust. the cylinders are numbered weird I thought , 1234 on pass side from bumper to firewall then 5678 drivers side. an easy way to find TDC is to turn the engine till all the valves are closed and crank key at 12:00, that should put dot at 6:00. as far as the phasers go, IMHO I would replace them since they have been updated to a better design. they also only go on 1 way so once you find TDC, you can unbolt them, replace with new and new chain, line up your marks and should be good to go. I would also replace the oil pump to a Melling high volume unit or equivalent. since you have everything open, it would be the ideal time. im going from memory on the keyway info so read up if you can, some info might be off. good luck
