Default Hurst shifter noise

I just installed a hurst 5speed shifter on my 06 gt. The shifter makes a thunk every time i go in and out of gear. It definitely shifts the gears without any grinding or anything it just makes a loud noise and is tight to get into gears. Is this just normal or does it need to break in or something?

Mine does the same thing. That's how a REAL shifter operates. Not like the rubber weeny from the factory where 3rd gear selection is a hit or miss proposition.

Thanks. I was a little woried. I don't know to much about the internals of a transmission but i heard of people bending shift forks from shifting to hard and wanted to make sure this wasn't going to happen.

Mine was really loud at first too and now its quiet unless your slamming it.
Does any one else get a vibration in 3rd on motor breaking. I did not notice the vibration with the stock shifter. Maybe it was muffled by the sloppy factory shifter. Im still considering taking it in...

My shifter handle seems to work loose and vibrate every now and then. I should have put some lok tight on it. It also makes a solid almost thud when I shift. I like its sound now though I did not at first. If you used the OEM bushings you can change them for Roush or Steeda urethane ones and quiet it down some. Hey it's a Hurst and looks great so live with it.

Your vibration is likely in the plastic radio bezel area. The poly bushings of the hurst transmit more vibration. I stuffed some foam behind my radio bezel on both sides and eliminated an annoying buzz that was coming from that piece of plastic. Once you determine where the vibration is coming from, figuring out a way to eliminate it is easy.

Yes, mine rattles a bit on deceleration in 3rd. If I put my hand on the shift ****, I can feel it rattle. That little annoyance is more than made up by the "Ahh that's cool" response from my old geezer gear head friends (we're at that 50+ range) when they look inside and see the famous q-ball with Hurst on the side. Also, Loktite is your friend on installation.

Also, this tranny is made by Tremec. That's the Mexico manufacturing arm of Dana Corp. Dana has been around for a zillion years and makes lots of drive train parts. There is really no reason to "slam" anything into place when shifting. The key is practice, practice, practice. The easiest way to shift into third is to just push forward from second with the palm of your hand. The springs in the transmission will guide all the parts into third. Third will appear as if by magic! This isn't a Peterbuilt with a 13 speed Roadranger!
