Technically doesn't Ford recommend the first oil change at 5000 miles?

Yes, but they are in the car business. They don't want this one to be your last Ford, so advise things that will prematurly wear out your car after a few years.

RE: Should I change the oil?
If my ford broke down after6 years and/or 72,000 miles there is no way I'd ever buy another... I expect engines to last 150,000 miles minimum if its poperly cared for..any less and it's junk! my mercury topaz was a pile of junk.. switched to pontiac for my last 2 cars, now i'm giving ford another shot, they better not disapoint me.
for reference, my dad's '96 suburban is pushing 200,000 miles and engine is still running great

Just have it changed. Your dealer might even offer coupons if you go to the myford webpage.
My dealer has coupons for a $20 oil change and $4 tire rotation. I can't even buy the supplies for that price.

Do it just for peace of mind. An oil change won't hurt anything, but crap oil in the motor will.
On a new car, I always change my oil over to synthetic at the 2,000 mile mark to give the motor some time to break in, but I also want to get those metal shavings out of there WAY before the 5,000 mile suggested interval.

RE: Should I change the oil?
I stopped by the dealer at lunch today and he assured me the oil had been changed at around 3,000 miles. To get me to bring the car back to him for service he gave me coupons for two free oil changes. Actually he wrote on the back of two business cards "Free L O F" and the date and his initials. I asked what "L O F" was and he said lube, oil and filter.
