Default to CAM or not to Cam?

I am looking at upgrading the cam, Stage 3/4. In the future I plan on go F/I using a S/C. What would be the bestcam stage, or should I just stay with the stock cam? Thanks

Cams are not cheap. A set of StageII blower cams and springs, retainers and locks is 1400-1600. labor will be 800-1500. There are people on the stock cams running tens with forced induction. The stock cams are pretty darn good. Most of the cams offered as NSR (no springs required) have like 1 MM more valve lift. Not worth it in my opinion but if you like them there are plenty of options from Comp, FRRP and Crane.

No cam... save for the FI... stock cams are really good. I havent seen any crucial power gains through cams. Now people are really just using cams for the sound...

I'd agree.. if you are planning on going F/I then cams aren't worththe cost.. 2k for a maximum increase of 30rwhp? vs 4-6k for a gain of 100-150rwhp should be a no brainer..

Save the money from the cam, and get some grape juice!!! That is true though most people use Cams for the lumpy idle, but I suppose if you match all of your internals for just a blower setup you might get a few more horses from it, but I don't think it will be anything to jump for joy over.

Good luck buddy,

-Matt

I was thinking the same things as you OP about 2 weeks ago, and now my car is in the shop getting comp cam stage 2 VSR blower cams installed. Costing me around 2k and I've been told by comp cam, the installer, and the tuner that I can get 40 rwhp from these cams. I'll let you know how it turns out and weather it was worth it or not.

Please post before and after dyno sheets so we can see what gains you get with blower cams without actually having a blower.

Um I'll have after dyno sheets on the 13th, but before now I've never been on the dyno. I'm also installing my aftercooler before I get on the dyno too though.

ive talked to brenspeed about this, and they told me to just get a low rise cam (nsr) and it should add about 32 rwhp (dyno sheets included)...the high rise cams give you that mean sound, but they said can actually knock off about 10 hp...also he said you wouldnt even have to remove the engine or anything to install them, and they are about $600...labor shouldnt be THAT much so you could prob get it all for under a grand and add about 30 rwhp...buts thats purely n/a, idk what you should plan on if you wanna go f/i

blower cams!!!! You can put blower cams in an engine before you have a blower and it will be ok, now the other way around is not ok. You might not see as much gains from the cams until you get the blower, but you'll get gains adding the cams and then some more gains from the cams when you put the blower on. Just make sure you get good tunes after both. IMO dont waste your time and money on the NSR cams if your gonna put a blower on. There is a reason they work with stock valve springs.
