will running open headers cause a power loss because of a lack of back pressure? i know you need some scavenging, so would i need to make sure to get some aftermarket headers to ensure i can fully void the remaining air in my cylinders?

i had a friend with a 94 mustang v6 an he put the cutout after the cats and had engine failure from it after about 6 months but that might be because he never had it closed and ran it all the time.

Im sure cutouts would not cause "engine failure."
It was probably something else

You dont want to do it. I have no cats, just mufflers to quiet my exhaust down. The other day, me and some buddies got bored and took my mufflers off... its WAY to loud. And i love loud exhausts, but its horrible. I don't think i could have driven near a main road w/out getting pulled over. For track.... i would get ear plugs too. Seriously.

I'd love to hear open headers with hot rod cams.

It would sound like the apocalypse. If the devil drove up in a mustang, that's what it would sound like.
