Default Max speed.

Anyone know the top end speed for 4th gear with 4.10 gears?

170-175 mph with the stock 17" tires and 6250 rpm redline.
Top speed increases directly with the ratio of the tire diameter and/or rpm redline if they are greater than the above, and it decreases in the same manner if they are less than the above.

170-ish would be for 5th gear if there was enough power to actually get up there (there isn't until you've added well over 100 hp)

4th gear, 4.10's, and 27" tall tires (769 revs per mile) give you 119 mph @ 6250 rpm

Norm
Thanks for the clarification for the majority of the S-197's out there, Norm.
However, I just want to note that I was taking the hp rating of the car in the OP's sig into account.

with my 3.55s my 4th gear goes to 140ish and then 5th gear didn't really have anymore pull.. that was before any mods though (but i haven't done much, and def not 100hp).. i know that doesn't help but i was just surprised about what he said about 4.10s goin to 119 cuz i think i get to about 110 in the end of 3rd

Brian,

119 trap speed would mean an mid 11 second pass.

Since you have the additional power I would recommend a taller tire, like a 305/45/18 DR or going with 3.73's so you can trap in 4th.

That is ofcourse if you car about the 1/4 mile.

Top of 4rth I bury the needle, I would be interested to see it on GPS. I just dont trust my hood, it is shaking like crazy at that speed. I think I need hood pins.

What rpm do you shift at?

Well the reason I am asking is for the drag strip, 1/4 mile specific. Right now I have 3.73s and I'm going across the line at 6000 rpms in 4th gear which is not ideal at all. I want to be almost to the rev limiter in 4th (6800 rpms) when I cross the line because my hp peaks at 6500 rpms at around 570 rwhp with 116 octane fuel. I mean I hit 122.3 mph in 4th at 6k rpms with 3.73s, so I'm trying to figure out what would be the best gear so I can I can trap at 6500+ rpms.

What you're asking for needs more accurate information. 4.10's are 9.9% shorter than 3.73's, so based on your above numbers you'd be at 6600 rpm @ 122. But since you're likely to pick up a little trap speed by virtue of seeing the power peak in 4th, you might end up on the limiter.

If your tires are OE-ish at ~770 revs/mile, then either the tach reading is a bit off or there is some slight tire slippage. I suspect tire slippage, since tires develop a little slip as they generate either lateral or acceleration/braking forces, and 3% is at least within reason. But it's too close to call without having better rpm data than watching a tach needle (such as might be available via datalogging).
