From the factory, the car is designed to run on 87.

+1. Use a 87 octane tune with 87 octane gas and everything will be fine.

I've been running my 93 brenspeed tune for the past 3 tanks. No difference other than its worse on gas. Same experience i had last time I tried it out 6 months ago. After this tank is done, I'm going back to 87.

No point in paying more and getting less out of it (same performance, less mpg). Plus premium is $.30 more here.

This is my first post on MustangForums.com, good to be here!

+1 on the 87 octane. I run Brenspeed's 87octane tune daily and its fine, I get the same mileage, and the power feels similar as well to the higher octane tunes.

When it comes to gas worry less about the octane than the quality. The S197 loves consistency more than octane.

are you sure its not worse on gas because your being more friendly with the torque?

what i've noticed is with an 87 it seems easier to slide the car (with a stick) in first, and then the higher rpms bog down a little. versus the higher rpm tune is balanced in the lower rpms, but really kicks in in the 3500-4000rpm range..

I experience similar results as slowstang06, although I typically run the 89 tune. The 93 spools up better in the upper RPM ranges whereas the 87 spools up better low. I find little difference between the 89 and 87 but I give a slight edge to the 89, finding it to be somewhet better for combination in-town and open road rabbit chasing when I'm running my typical, 1-2 times per month, 820 mile trips.
