Default Seeking rear end info.

The day before Thanksgivings, I had a brain fart, I used a stop light as a stop sign. Pulled up to the red light, stopped, then tookoff. Guess what's next? Anybody?? A lady in a Caddie hit me in the rear drivers side. Took most of the hit in the rear tire, minimal body damage, thank you god.
Here's the bad part. I noticed the axle has moved to the right a couple off inches. The panhard rod has a nice curve in it now. I drove the car home and had no noticable vibrations, just a small squeak when the brake is applied. When i got home i noticed a smell, like french fries frying. The brake rotor was extremely hot, the other rotors were warm to touch. The smell didn't seem to come from the rotor though. Seemed more from middle of car.

Our cars have a two piece driveshaft, correct? I haven't seen my driveshaft, but from pics i've seen, it looks like a carrier bearing in the center. Is this correct?? Could this be the source of the smell??

I have pro's fixing the stang, but i'm curious. What do you guy's think.

I think i'll tell my bodyman about New take off axles. I'm sure he knows, but one shouldn't assume. I've never messed with gears, so here's a question. How much would fuel consumption go up by swapping 3:31to the 3:73.

Thanks for your time and sorry for the rambling post.

I have 3.73s - I get low 20-23 MPG on highway and ~16 City. Note that MPG is highly dependent on your driving style.
