Default Sometimes Starter Doesn't Activate

I just picked up a 2006 GT still under warranty. A couple of times when I have turned the key to start the car, the gauges and warning lights come on in the "On" postion, but when I turn the key further to "Start" nothing else happens. There is no clicking or unusual sounds, the starter just doesn't activate.

Jiggling the steering wheel doesn't seem to make a difference and I am pushing the clutch all the way to the floor. After a couple of tries it will engage. On one attempt, it engaged for a split second then quit. Must be a bad connection somewhere.

I can take it to the dealer, but wondering if there is some wiring connection to the starter I can check first?

John

Since it's under warranty AND it can be any number of possiblle wiring issues, I'd let the dealer deal with it. I suspect it's a faulty ignition switch or clutch switch that's intermittent.

Although I'm not sure how the key's electronics work (do the '06's have the security coded key?), I might even suspect that.

I would suspect a mis-adjusted clutch safety switch.
Have you added extra large floor mats by any chance?
If the flashing lock icon disappears when you put
the key in and turn on the ignition, the PATS system
is functioning correctly.
All 05-09 S197s all have the PATS system.

Agreed. This has tripped me up once or twice; I attributed it to my mats. The first time I actually got out the jump starter kit before realizing it. Luckily I tried one more time. Felt pretty stupid

I just took my car in for the same thing this week....06 as well.
This is how it started.....I would turn over and it wouldn't go...try again and it would fire...then I would have to try 2 times and nothing...etc...then it just wouldn't start one day.
I towed it to them, and the whole time they had it it was fine...

Now I found a leak that was messing up my whole electrical system...I am sure this was symptom of the leak issue...

Not sure you have the same but spray your car down real good...especially on the passenger side by the door and whinshiled etc...then check to see if the floor board is damp by the kick panel...

+1
look for the signs of water intrusion by the
passengers side kick panel and carpet/pad

Owners Manual for a complete
description of how PATS works.
Passive Anti Theft System is
what the acronym stands for.
Its a chip in your key that
is pinged by the vehicle
when you insert the key
and turn it to the run position.
If the chip does not return a
valid code, the PATS will not
allow the engine to start.
