Default Heard a scary noise

So i was on my way to work this morning when i took the exit for work and i was in the far left lane and decided i wanted to go to the gas station first which was three lanes over to the right...well i was in 4th goin about 40 and i needed to get over quick cause there were cars comming up from behind and i had to speed up or id miss my chance..so i dropped it into 2nd and heard a kind of hard plastic cracking sound, kind of a mix of a snap and a pow sound, not too terribly loud but not soft either...i looked in my rear view immediatly to see if it was in fact a hard plastic piece i ran over and couldnt see anything(still doesnt mean nothin was there)....car was still running and shifting just fine but im still not convinced that im good..so my question, is that sound i described associated with anything breaking, saayyy when you drop a gear or two? ?

Did you rev match before selecting second gear, or just put it in second and punch the gas?

You were probably dumping a lot of fuel to be doing 40 in 4th gear. Most likely a backfire.
