Default Cams / Power Level

Hello all -

I'm looking into getting some cams. Would that kind of power be putting my transmission in danger? My motor?

Would it be better to wait until I replace the rotating assembly? I've heard of people running 450 - 500 HP with no issues, but my car is an automatic with 430hp at the wheels already.

Thanks,

Eric

You can see power increases int he 50rwhp maybe more IF you get the right cams and the right tune. You must contact a cam company like Comp and they will be able to fit the best cam for your blower, tranny, rear gear combo. As for safety your motor will fine, transmission on the other hand.....eh... the 5s55r or whatever its called is a weak one. Expect it to let loose eventually.

How much do you think you will pick up with cams?

Really? I see really high rwhp drag race people breaking the spline in their transmission occasionally, but that's it. Except for the clutch. If you run a mid-400's car hard you might loose the clutch eventually.

But as I understand it, our tranny's are really pretty tough.

I gotta agree with VistaBlue on this...these autos are weak. Sure, there are some folks who are putting a lot of power through the stock 5R55S, but those transmissions are on borrowed time. Just make sure you have a good dyno tune, that is extremely important with these transmissions expecially if you're putting down a lot of power.

Are you doing cams for the sound or power?
If your going for power you can max out your stock short block with just pullie changes with the Saleen blower.
Pullie changes are much cheaper than cams.

Well this seems like a good thread to add my comments to... I am also looking to throw a new cam in my 05 GT stang. I would like the perfect balance between idle sound, emissions friendly and also ease on the motor. I have an automatic and just wondering what size you guys recommend. Thanks

Well technically no aftermarket cam is emissions friendly since they did not go through all the crap with the EPA. But that doesn't mean you can't pass with them.

You should look into the Ford Racing (FRPP) Hot Rod cams and the Comp Cams Thumpr series. I plan on getting the Comp Cams ***** Thumpr myself.

you're wasting your money on cams without a converter. you would have to get 50hp power out of a cam to match the performance of a converter, and then you will still need a converter. a conveter will knock close to 5 tenths off maybe more with as much power as you already have.
