Default Auto tansmission problem?

Earlier today when I put my car into reverse, the shifter moved but the car didn't roll backwards. I thought it just didn't go in so I put it back into park and put it into reverse again, this time it went in but made some clunking noises. I have never heard my transmission make this sound. I'm not very hard on the car and i never "speed shift" it. Is my transmission going out after 40,000 miles or is this something else? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

How does the fluid look? Nice and pink? Up to the line?

The fluid looks good, it had sat for a day and it was just above 100. Driving it today it seems back to normal. If it happens again I will take it to ford and have them take a look at it. I'm not sure what about make it happen once and not again.
