Default LT Headers and catted x-pipe w/ stock mufflers

I know there have been a million questions about exhaust, but here goes anyway...... I am planning BBK LT's with a catted x-pipe for my next mod, but I don't want anything real loud - just a little over stock with a nice growl, so I'm thinking of just leaving the stock mufflers on for now. Has anyone done a similar set up ? How does it sound ? I've heard the the x-pipes can be more raspy than an H, and I really don't like the raspy sound, but my local shop is running a good special on this BBK set-up, and it appears that BBK doesn't make a catted H-pipe. Will the cats make them less raspy ? I also cannot stand any drone. Are the mufflers the only factor in drone, or can that come from the mid pipe also ? I have to go catted because of the inspections here in TX.

Cats will reduce the raspiness. Stock mufflers will sound good with that setup as would magnaflow, JBA and GTAs.

resonators are good at keeping the farty raspness sound down.

So, would this set-up just be a little louder than stock ? I'm doing in mainly for the performance gains of the headers and mid-pipe, and don't want it too loud. It makes be nervous spending that much money and not knowing how it's going to sound. And I have looked through all of the sound clips, but I honestly think these are a waste of time. You can't get the real sound by recording it on a crappy little mic from a video cam, and then playing it back on crappy little computer speakers.

Where does the resonator go ?

Hagwood,

I am actually running that exact setup right now. It is louder than stock and sounds nice when you get on it above 3000 rpms. However, at and around idle it sounds pretty much stock which is why I'm looking for something a little louder that can give it a nice rumble. I had the MAC mufflers and that sounded awesome but it was just too loud. I'm thinking the Bullitt mufflers would sound good or maybe some magnaflows.

Thanks surf808, great to hear from someone with the exact set-up. So does it have any raspiness when romping on it ? Did you notice a performance gain ? Yeah, the guy at the shop said the magnaflows would sound real good with it, but I thought I would just see how I like it with the stock mufflers first - glad to hear it's not too loud.

*not my car

I was actually forced to run that setup for a few weeks until my Stingers arrived. That was after having the headers put on a car with SLP loudmouths and coming to the sad realization that it was just to loud and bad sounding (specially on an A/T).

Idle sounded exactly like stock. It wasn't until you gave it a few revs that you caught a glimpse of the open trajectory between the engine and the back of the car. I could still set off a few of the most sensitive car alarms in a closed parking area.

It actually sound pretty good/stealth like. But I wanted more, so I got the Stingers and couldn't be happier.

Try it out.

There is slight rasp. Performance wise I feel that the car seems to pull harder after 3500. I think a little rasp is good though.
