Default 3.73 question

Before I go in to Ford, I was wondering how long it took them to install yours and (if you don't mind of course) how much you paid. I called the nearest dealership and, unless I'm REALLY underestimating how much work this is, the cost seemed pretty high to me.

Mine were installed at a little place in Flat Rock, Michigan. Cost was $495 including labor.

But seriously, shouldn't be too much, it's not a really difficult process. How much are they asking for the labor?

800+ for 8 hours of work. I almost laughed on the phone when he told me.

Yeah I would have laughed too...find an independent shop that you know is reliable and is capable of doing this type of work.

Actually, it's not that bad...... The average price for FRPP Gears is around 200 bucks. The average price for labor (at least around here) is about 400 bucks total. That's 600 right there. Then throw in additional crap like friction modifier, bearings, etc., and the price can easily climb to 800 bucks. But, the most important thing is that if you get it done by Ford, it will be covered under their warranty. We all know how easily a gear job can go wrong.... Gear whine, etc..... So, let's say that it was the cheapest prices..... 200 bucks for gears, 400 bucks for labor. That's 600 bucks. Add 200 for the warranty. Doesn't sound too bad if you think of it like that.

Edit..... Don't think I'm one of those "You better get it done at the dealer" guys. I'm usually the first one to say that the dealerships suck. But with gears.... It's better to be safe than sorry. I've heard countless horror stories of gear installs gone wrong.

Small caveat, but the 800 quoted was without the gears, so I'd be looking closer to 1k for the whole thing. I'm all for the dealer doing the work so I can keep my warranty, but that's a bit more than I want to spend on this.

Thats what I originally though you meant but it wasn't specifically said...so 800 just for labor? Wow...

Wow. Glad I got Flat Rock to do mine. $495 is a hell of a deal, IMO.
