Pulling the front cover, any tips?
Hey All,
Durring my cam install I experienced a odd problem, long story short my timming chain wedge worked itself past the chains and thrown down near the gears on the crank, behinde the chains and is now stuck. I have a rope tied off on it so I dont loose it all together, but that thing is not going anywhere.
AS a result, I am going to have to pull the front cover of the motor to get at it. I have never done this and havent done the research yet (as I was not expecting to have to do it.) Wondering what tips any of you guys have that have pulled it. Like for example do I actualy have to pull every pulley or can I just pull the ones that get in the way? Thanks for any help.

i see what you are saying about the pulleys.
just the ones that get in the way...
the bolts that hold the timing cover on are
different sizes, so find a way to keep track
of where they go, for reinstalling.
ok, found the link...

nice, that should help, I only saw the complete dissassmbly of the motor, its nice to have the guide for a specific piece like that.
Looking through there.. Can get a pulley puller from Autozone no problem, but what are all the other specialty tools and do you really need them?

Ahh crappp.. the front cover gaskets are backorderd.... So are they the same type material as the valve covers? What I am getting at is if I remove them very carefully and they are not damaged at all, are they reusable.

they are very similar from what i remember,
the timing cover gaskets might be a smidgen
more rigid.
i got mine from Tousley and they came in
about a week. i wouldn't be surprised if
some have reused them, it's a judgement
call.
might as well pull the cover carefully and see
what kind of shape they are in...

The crank pulley bolt is a TTY. The front item only need to be removed if they are in the way of bolts. Be sure to put silicone in the pulley keyway when putting it back, and on the splice joints where stock silicone was used, including where the valve covers go over the front cover.
For keeping track of the bolts, I used a muffin pan, wrote down which bolts came from where and put different bolts in different parts of the pan.
I don't remember if the a/c compressor or power steering pump bolt partly to the front cover, but they might with one bolt each.
The gasket is 3 pieces and can be reused; if you have time, get new ones. They're not that expensive.

yeah the lowers were $6.00 each and the upper was $7 but out of stock, I have low miles on the motor so just going to take it slow. If anything gets a gouge in it, I'll order em up and leave the car down till I get them in. I plan on making a diagram of the motor and pulley locations (just scribble on a paper) and number everything I take off, that way whatever has to come off will go in a numbered zip lock bag. Thanks for all the tips though, I'll let you all know how it turns out, might start tonight, if not tommorow AM
