Exclamation 4.10 Gears. OMG Read this! Help needed

O.K.
So my bud is unavailable to install my gears for a while.
(A good while). No I have not ordered them yet.
So I figured I would call the dealership and ask them for a quote.
(Supplies + Labor)

Given that most people here have said their total price for a dealership job was about 550 I figured it wasnt that bad and I'd do it. Plus the advantage of having the work
warrantied as opposed to having someone that couldnt warranty it do it.
-----------------------------------
First place I called.... informed me they were not an authorized Ford Racing dealer and that they would rather not touch it... but if they did do the job I was looking at 80 bucks an hr plus parts.
--------------------------------------
Second Place... straight forward answer of 982.00 plus tax.
--------------------------------------
Third Place.... 1010.00
--------------------------------------------
Forth place... and get this... on the phone this guy said we will NOT do this. It is against the law and you will not pass emissions and you will not ever be able to sell your car. I was like wtf? What does the gearing ratio have to do with emissions? This guy gave a vague answer of "it changes everything in your car." He said "call a place like Dallas Mustang, a race car setup place and they will do it but tell you the same thing."

So I was like o.k., I think you are full of **** so I will call them. Called em... guy said he had never heard of that.

I was pissed by this time... given that others here have claimed a total cost of 550 average for the job, and I had been given quotes of almost double from every dealership. That and the top off of this other guy really pissed me off.

So despite the fact that I should not have... I called that dealership back and talked to another service guy giving him an earful. He did not tell me I was wrong but told me they would not do it. He said "Well that was Joe you were talking to."

I told him Joe was full of **** and that he should be fired for saying something was illegal just so that they could be lazy and sit on their asses and lose money.
I almost felt bad except for the fact that Joe had talked to me like I was a jackass the first time. (I did not type our full conversation.) The other guy was like "Well I guess your frustrated are'nt ya?" and hung up on me ..hahaha
I was pissed but just HAD to laugh at that.

Anyway....
How the hell could putting 4.10 gears
1. void your warranty?
2. make you fail emissions?
3. make yous so you could NEVER sell your car?
4. Be fined 25k (and yes Joe said this was the fine)?

I am so pissed right now.
Everything.... I SWEAR EVERYTHING always turns out being complicated for me.
I am saying this guy is full of shat especially when no other dealership or shop told me this.

And I am pissed that everyone else is getting jobs done for about half the price as me.
I think the dealership Gods have it in for me.
And no shop around here wants to do it.

P.S. I'm in West Texas
I called dealerships from here to the Dallas areas.
If anyone knows one that would do it for the price everyone has said they had it done at.. Please let me know.
I got a good quote from Dallas Mustangs... but by the time I got done with gas mileage, and the cost of a hotel... I'd be way up in cost again!!!

End rant.
End questions.

Commments and answers are hereby opened!

Personally I would call Joe back and tell him to suck a fat one. I just paid a little over $750 for parts and labor for my 4.10s. Depending on how bad you want them either pay it or wait for your buddy. Or try calling dealerships a little farther away.

Umm... I just called a different dealership located in San Angelo Tx.

The guy told me it IS illegal because it messes with the emission control.
( Although I still don't understand why it would)
Was Joe right and I am a ***** for doing what I did?

Hell no. Gears have nothing to with emissions dude. That's like saying changing mufflers will make your wipers stop working. The two parts have no relation at all.

I beg to differ and your comparason is like apples to oranges...
Gears and emissions go hand in hand at speed.
At a stand still, it has nothing to do with it.
But who starts the engine and then does not drive it?

Taller (4.10) GEARS would cause
the engine rpms to be higher for
any given speed so the emissions
would go up in compared to the
same vehicle with 3.55s.

Thats the only reasoning I can think of for increased emissions.
Welcome to the 'Jeeessss, there sure are lots of incompetent people out there' club.
Happens to all of us. You are not alone.

Dealers are notorious for charging an arm and a leg for gear install. The dealer I called quoted me $750 for labor alone. I ended up paying $650 for parts and labor at a local speed shop. I agree with loudlow, look for other tuner/speed shops in your area. I bet they will charge at the most $400 for labor.
