Default Help! Revving by itself!

I have come across a weird situation in the past few days... At a complete stop the car seems fine, but if I am coasting to a red light in neutral or down a hill or something the car revs up and down by itself.. its not much.. but it will go from like 800 to 1400 and back down to 800...I took off my filter and cleaned it thinking maybe it was dirty and the car was starving for air but that didnt seem to do anything... now a week has past the check engine light came on... what can this be?

Get the code pulled at Autozone (free) and go from there. However, it never hurts to try the simple stuff first like cleaning your TB and MAF.

Also... do you have cams?

If so this is normal.
I had this too and hammeron educated me on it.
It is called a "hunting idle". You can get rid of it but the trade off
is a higher RPM idle.

Oh wait.... you said a check engine light came on....
nevermind... that is not normal.
I second cleaning the TB and MAF

If you have an SCT see if it will read the code for you.

I had a hunting idle like this a while back. Of course with my hot rod cams those made it even worse. The issue was cleared up once I cleaned the crap out of my TB and MAF. It's amazing how much of a different that made. Huge difference.

New revelation.. Don't know if this will help you guys further help me until I can go get my SCT2 and read the check engine light but now it still hunts but randomly as I'm coasting in neutral it will stall out and I have to turn the car back on... last night it was rather dangerous because it stalled out heading into a turn and the steering wheel and brakes all locked up on me
