Advice please, trade in 04GT for 06GT???
Hi everybody, this is my first thread. I posted this earlier today on another forum and am hoping for some additional thoughts. I know Machs & Terminators are options, but I think I'd prefer the 05+ platform - thanks!!
I test drove an 06 GT today and holy S is this thing fast compared to my 04GT. It has 24,500 miles/ Metallic Gray/ Flows/ JVC stereo - otherwise stock. Concerns are a few deep scratches that are through the clear coat which I'd have to touch up & live with. Tires are original & there's an orange border to the black striping that's peeling (dealer thinks they can take it off and just leave the black). Plus there's a dime size hole punched in the panel by the ac vents. Maybe somebody had a nav there, but I was told they'd fix it. No fogs & it needs a good detailing.
04 GT has 18k miles. I paid $9,000 & added $1,400 in mods - runs mint.
I know dealers will try to rape me, but the $17,500 price seems reasonable. They offered me $10,500 on my trade. He played a little game where he wanted me to be willing to leave a deposit for him to go back to the boss to see how much better he can do. I said I was going to lunch & would mull it over. I'm sure I can get my trade in value to go up to 11k and the 06 GT down to 17k even. The benefit of the trade in is that I would save about $960 in taxes & I doubt I could get 11k even in a private sale.
Carfax is clean, but shows a dealer auction a couple of years ago in PA - could have been a repo, no evidence of water damage. Engine was spotless.
My DD is a paid off Mazda 6, but I'm not sure if I can justify having a $17,000 weekend car. I live in Long Island, NY and prices are generally higher here. There are many 07 GT's for sale for substantially more, even from private sellers.
I like the look of both, but the S197 is so much more refined and powerful. I don't think insurance would go up too much & you only live once. Assuming I can afford the upgrade, is it worth it??

In all honesty, I'd shoot for an '07 or '08. The '06s and even some of the '07s were still plagued with the rash of TSB's associated with the S197 platform.
$17k is a bit high for an '06 GT, IMO. 1 1/2 years ago I bought my g/f an '06 Pony, decked out and with 9600 miles on it for $13.5k and that was before the '11s were announced.
Good luck.

17k is pretty good around here, you got a steal if you got an 06 GT for 13.5.

I would avoid the hole in the dash JVC modded 06 GT.
Have em fix it all BEFORE signing - like they make it out
to be no big deal fixing a hole in the dash...
What happened to the Fogs? Gone or non-functional?
The Flows seem to indicate the previous owner had
the same seat of the pants driving style as you have...
You want a Virgin, non-modded GT to work with...
Something thats Totally Stockola. Previously owned by a little
old lady who only drove it to the store and church on sunday. :P

If you like the car, go for it. I'm not sure what TSB's are out on my 06 but I have not had one single problem with it as of yet. I personally was happy I didn't have to fork over extra cash for tire pressure sensor's when I put on aftermarket wheels due to it being an 06. I don't believe the 07-09 have any more horsepower either.

TSB's are more like an acknowledged problem area....or possible problem area. Every car made will have them regardless of year. Nuke is basically stating that 05 and 06 probably have more than normal due to still being a new model but I haven't had any issues yet...
He didn't get an 06 GT...he got an 06 Pony car...a V6 I believe. They are always WAY cheaper everywhere I look.

Do the trade! The 06 (like my 05) is a lot of fun!
Side note about the TSBs for earlier model years of a line: My 05 has had ZERO manufacturer related issues. The only problems it has are the ones I create! LOL

If someone is able to add a pic or two on the thread, even better. Thanks!

All I said was it sounded a bit high IMO. If that's his best deal and all looks good, then more power to him. The '06 I bought was a V6 Pony Package; $4k less and 1 1/2 years earlier. Yeah, the V6's are cheaper but not by $4k and 1 1/2 years later.
There are a few TSB's that are expensive to resolve IF the car has that problem and IF it's out of warranty. Best to become knowledable before signing for a problem child. For instance, I drove the Pony off the dealers lot for a test drive and noticed the symptoms of the fuel pump TSB issue. The car had 2 months warranty left and was fixed when I came back with the check.
