Only thing I'm worried about in my car is the VCT and the tranny/drive shaft.

It is a good read. There are a few S197s on these forums boasting very high rwhp....but they are not launched repeatedly on a prepped surface with slicks. That is why they survive for so long without mishaps. Most of the energy slipping and sliding on a typical road surface with DRs is diverted away from the car's frame. Once the car sticks with a hard biting launches at a well manicured dragstrip, all that energy is absorbed by the car and distributed to various components. Stuff has to break. The faster S197s are usually speed-shop owned or there is a financial arrangement between the shop and owner.

This is what has failed in my car.
oil pump cracked during a a low 10s pass. Changed to something stronger
head gaskets blown and pistons twisted at 22 lbs boost
trutrac shredded following repeated transbrake launches (probably around 650 rw?)
GT500 dual pumps failed twice causing lean conditions
stock intake manifold failed to evenly distribute gases at high boost. Swapped to a JPC intake manifold race-proven on 8s mustangs

What has not broken and why
The transmission was a 4r70w reinforced to handle transbrake launches with 1000+ hp. Since swapped to a 2 speed GM powerglide with scattershield, even stronger than before
Rear end was swapped out to a 9 inch a long time ago.
Driveshaft was single piece and reinforced. Now gone to a custom with GM yolk

I don't know if you would consider my rwhp to be high or not (565RWHP) but I have been around 550 rwhp for 2 years. Been on drag radials the entire time and go to the track whenever weather, money and scheduling let it happen. I usually get into the 1.5s or 1.6s for 60' running low 11's now. I consider myself very lucky to have not broken anything at the track. I am really shocked the tranny is alive still. I'm even on the 10 spline input shaft. Go figure.

Was your true track a locker style or gear driven LSD?

I have a locker made by Auburn (Detroit).
