Default Accident waiting to happen

I just replaced this...

with this.

Turns out that all 4 of the Riken Raptors had sidewall cracks. I noticed the cracks while under my car tightening loose exhaust clamp bolts. I couldn't believe it - all 4 tires! Anyway, now I've got a new set of Nitto 555's.

As a farewell to the Raptors I got 1 more smokey burnout in the tireshops parking lot with the whole staff watching. It was great...well over a minute long with clouds of smoke everywhere.

holy ****, nice catch...that looks really bad and dangerous...how do you like the 555s? That burnout would have been great to get on film...

How old were the tires? That really shouldn't happen unless the tires are really old or abused. Glad you caught that.

What tire pressure were you running with the Riken's?

I never heard of Riken tires. Are they some cheaper tires?
With cracks like that, on all four tires, I wonder if that is a common flaw. If it is, I am surprised that they are USDOT approved.

Riken tires are presumably manufactured by Michelin North America Inc.
As of yet we have not been able to confirm this. It may be that the tires
are manufacture and imported and sold by Michelin North America.

Riken Tires are classified as an ultra-high performance tire.
Many car high end manufactures had Riken tires as stock from
1995 through the present time. Such manufactures have been
BMW, Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz and Lincoln. The tires were supplied
as OEM on many different Car models from the above named car makers.

google 'crappy riken tires' and see....

The tires were on the car when I bought it last fall. The car came with all of the window stickers & dealer info. The 20" Shelby Razors & the Raptors were dealer installed (along with the Shaker hood and a few other things). I had the car inspected before I bought it and the tires were good then. I'm not sure what caused it but all 4 were showing the same sidewalk cracking.
I kept them at 35psi.
I can't say they were a poor tire quality perhaps it was just to many summers in N. Texas heat. They did good in weather and had decent traction but I do like the 555's better.

If they are michelin, they must be made overseas under sub-contract via outsourcing by Hankook or some other lower grade tire makers that barely meet USDOT specs. Afteraall, Michelin does own a tiny share of Hankook.
