BBK CAI
 

so my new to me 09-GT came with a bbk CAI. these any good. just wondering.

I have one on my 05 gt and going from stock to this one and i could feel an improvement in throttle response. However with it being a no tune required CAI you aren't going to see huge gains without a tuner to optimize it. It is a decent one so I wouldn't throw it out but I would get a tuner to get the most of of the engine. Most people will say JLT or another CAI are better but those require a tune due to the larger MAF tubing. The BBK is fine and within 1-2 hp of other CAI's with the tunes being equal. I got it because I picked it up for $130 brand new and it is CARB legal for me in CA and requires no tune as I still have the extended warranty to deal with. (cant use a non approved tune without voiding the warranty. FRPP is the only one I can use and it isn't that great for the $$)

A no-tune required CAI might yield about 3-5 RWHP if that. Add a tune to that on the 4.6L and you'll see about 20-25 RWHP plus improved throttle response and overall driveability. I think the BBK has a removable baffle that is removed if you have a tune but I could be thinking of another CAI.

The BBK doesn't have the baffle but the airaid does. The tune really is where most of your gains will be.

thanks guys for the quick response, i did notice on the drivers side strut tower there is a BBK 50 state carb legal sticker. so i guess im good to go with that. now i just have to find a good kit to clean the filter, its pretty nasty looking, any recommendations on what cleaning kit i should get for the air filter... nobody around here carries BBK, i called several auto parts stores already

Any CAI cleaning kit will work providing you can find the oil dyed to match. Basically, the kits contain a degreaser and the oil; both in spray bottles. It doesn't need to have BBK on the label. I had a tough time finding a kit with blue oil for my Steeda.

Matter of fact, as long as you can get the oil in the color you need, you can use any household degreaser (dishwashing detergent works just fine, so does MeanGreen or most others) and hot water since all you're doing is flushing the old oil and grit/chunkies out of the filter. BE SURE TO FLUSH FROM THE INSIDE OF THE FILTER OUT.

After you've rinsed it thoroughly and have shaken all the excess water out, allow it to air dry for 24 hours; 12 or less if you can put a fan on it. Do NOT use compressed air. It can destroy/weaken the pleats. After it's dry, I usually hit it with 2 light applications of oil spaced about 15 minutes apart.

I've been using the KN cleaner and oil on my BBK for 140k miles now and its still nice and blue. Dont worry about it being a red oil.
