why blame the dealer? it's a used car, the previous owner(s) could have stuck that thing in there.

So what? The dealership sold the OP the car, therefore they are responsible for correcting the problem.

somewhere there is a Ford Ranger owner putting 11 quarts of oil into his truck so he can get a correct reading on his shorter Mustang dipstick.

If you bought the car from the dealership, and bought a 30 thousand dollar car. They had better say there sorry and and get you a dipstick... There shouldn't be any arguing to this point.

Here are pics of the proper dip stick and comparison to the one that was in there. Last pic shows a proper (though slightly messy) reading with the right amount of oil. Whew, glad that mess is over.
