Engine making a whining noise
#12
his noise type, without hearing it firsthand, could be the alternator, belt pulley, or P/S pump.
You could remove the drivebelt, start the engine, let it idle for a few seconds, and see if the whine disappears. Then you'll know that the source is a belt-driven accessory (alternator most likely).

Noise occurred for 2 days and then stopped abruptly. Will not duplicate. GT Automotive stated the pulleys were fine and did not charge me one red cent for trying to diagnose it, as they were already making money on my Royal Purple oil change (& R.P. filter) and tire rotation. Thanks for all the advice.

Noise came back a few days later and as soon as it did, the radio stopped working and the electric power steering stopped working. I looked at my voltage gauge and it was less than 5 volts. Made it to GT Automotive with no power steering and they confirmed it was the alternator. This Motorcraft OEM new alternator was not cheap ($350.00 +), however, it was still cheaper than the rebuilt ones I found online. This was 2 months ago but I forgot to reply to close out this thread. Everything running fine for the past few months.
