Here is what they came up with:
Daleford,I just went on the FORD part site and looked up your axles, they list the same PART# for BOTH left and right hand side.
The PART # is 4238 for BOTH sides, hope this helps you.

For me that is confirmation -- same part number.

All I know is that last time I disassembled an S197 8.8" axle the left and right were different lengths. The housings are the same length but the axles themselves are different.

Actually it would make sense that they would be different.
I found out yesterday from Tasca Ford that they both [R and L] have the same part number except for the last digit. Tasca says if one digit is off, then they are not the same. Another clue: there is a price difference between the two.

They are different between right and left, notice the last character of the part number and the Left/Right designations in the description....

I prefer looking things up on fordpartsgiant dot com as they give the COMPLETE part number. unlike Fordparts.com

THANKS---
Finally I have decided that they are different left and right.
Why were so many people trying to convince me that they were identical???
Now, where could I find the actual lengths of the 2 axels?

I'm glad that you have confirmation. I no longer have the axles so couldn't go out and get a picture to show that there is a significant difference between them.

Yes, Good to know but now I need to take back the left axel the guy sold me as he repeated "R and L are the same".
Wish someone could come up with a length measurement of the 2.........

WHOOPIE Great info and it only took a week and a half for me to find it!
[Actually Derfoo found it --- THANKS]
The used axle I bought is exactly 32 and 11/16 long. So it is a right side and that is the one I need. Whoopie
