4 Months Out of Warranty. Only 21,000 Miles and THIS happens...
Hey guys,
Just wanted to see what some of you think of my situation.
I have a 2014 GT (CS), with only 21,000 miles in the 5 years I've had it.
This thing might as well wear a diaper because it's babied to death.
My warranty expired in April of this year (2018) and go figure, this month,
I start hearing a humming sound coming from the rear of the car. Pretty
loud and audible. I call the Official Ford Dealership where I purchased
the car and scheduled an appointment to get it checked out.
Today, I get the call, turns out the right side of the rear differential is shot
and needs a "repair/rebuild" totaling $2400. Now, I know they say "Grown
men don't cry" but man I'm close. This is just a slug to the gut, especially
on something I don't abuse and with so little mileage. The icing on the cake
is that this happens 4 MONTHS out of warranty!
What should I do? This came out of nowhere. And it's unfortunate because I
have 2 other Fords and I've always liked Ford, but this is an eye opener.

Get a second opinion from another garage that you can trust. The total cost of parts & labor shouldn't be more than $1000 and even that's a pessimistic estimate.

You can convert to an 8.8 rear for much MUCH less... They are not hard to change the
whole rear axle. Time consuming, hard, no. Opening the diff and fixing, costs more,
more labor. Cheaper parts, more labor...

deadmau5, everyone here has hit the nail right on the head. If you are the least bit mechanically inclined, you can get a new 8.8 complete Rear Axle Assembly with 3.73 gears for $1,289.00 from just about any third party vendor. The problem with the dealer is the labor charge. It can come to more than the cost of the item.

At that price you should be getting a nice rear end. One with Moser axles and all the trimmings. You need to find a good speed shop and get there opinion. 2400 would know doubt net you a built rear end used for 1/4 mile racing.

Thanks for all the responses.
Basically, I was told it needs a new Pinion gear, spacers, and carrier bearings with that side being "rebuilt"
Does anyone have any links to the recommended part I should just order and then have installed?
Also, anyone feel like jumping on a 3-way call with me as my "brother" who knows more about cars than I do
when I call the dealer back later? haha
Thanks again to all who replied.
