Drawbacks to a tune and CAI?
#11
This come more from a question standpoint than response as I am BY FAR......NO EXPERT.... I am wondering about CAI's. The vast majority of them aren't completely sealed. SO in reality, aren't you actually pulling engine compartment air, at its increased temperature into the engine. Unless you relocate the filter to an area that can supply fresh air I don't see a benefit. Every time you see a dyno pull to show the "added" HP, it's with the hood up in a controlled environment. I don't know about you guys, but I certainly don't drive around with my hood up or off. I personally would stick with my stock air box and a high flow filter as its sealed and pulls in only fresh air. Yes, you can say the aftermarket ones have a larger diameter tube, but what good is it if its warm air engine air?

The stock air-box, if sealed right, pulls air from the outside, through the fenderwell.
If you can see a gap, you're getting some engine compartment air. You only need to
remove the air-box, and put 1/2" of a rubber padding around the intake opening so it
seals against the fenderwell. My '07 Charger, there was a coupler, so the air box
sealed against that, and was tubed out into the fenderwell. These S197 Mustang
ones just seal against it, with no outer tubing. With my Charger, I was able to tube
it all the way down to the fog opening on that side. Just didn't drive it in the rain....

I do not mean to hijack this thread but when I tune it,
1. Does it have to be plugged in to the charger, cause my radio turns on with the ignition on
2. Can I just use jumper cables and another car that is running to maintain the battery level

Correct, CAI is a misnomer when referring to most aftermarket air intakes as they do not take cold air in but hot engine bay air. I use the Bullitt one that is sealed off from the engine bay and takes air in from the front lip of the hood. Not the one with the metal shielded put out by Shelby but the OEM FRPP one like this. It's what came factory on the Bullit version of the Mustang for 2007-2008.

My money is on the '08 Bullitt tune, the regular tune for 2010, and the '08 FRPP tune being basically the same thing under different names.
I haven't noted any drawbacks over the last 11 years . . .
I hope OP hasn't been placing too much faith in whatever dyno numbers he was seeing.
